Gulley, Mary E.

Source: Crawfordsville Weekly Journal Friday, 2 November 1900

Yesterday shortly before 2 o’clock a.m. Mary E. Gulley, aged fifty four years, died quite suddenly at the home of Cynthia Foster, 204 West Harrison Street. The funeral occurred this morning at 10 o’clock. Interment was at the Old Town Cemetery.  Mrs. Gulley was the wife of John Gulley, but had not lived with him for years. She was a confirmed morphine eater and could dispose of huge quantities of the stuff. Wednesday she had a hard chill and became quite sick and feverish in the evening. She sent a boy to the drug store for morphine and he purchased a dime’s worth for her. This she took and died at two o’clock. Coroner Keegan held an inquest yesterday and decided that her death was probably due to the morphine. She had been addicted to the habit for fifteen years. – thanks to S for this one
